Yarmouth was incorporated as a town in 1639 from the Indian lands known as
"Mattacheese". Early settlers toiled as farmers and fishermen and for
many years Yarmouth existed as a quiet, rural seaside community.
Today Yarmouth is a unique blend of a busy resort town and an attractive,
peaceful family and retirement community. The busy retail stretch on the south
side (Rte 28) of town where most commerce is congregated contrasts greatly with
the quaint, protected, nearly unspoiled northern (Rte 6A) side of town.
Between, amid and around these major byways lay Yarmouths wonderful
"neighborhoods", some sea- side colonies, some weathered
mini-communities, some retirement villages, and some typical
residential neighborhoods. But all benefiting from the joys of ocean and bay
beaches, recreation and conservation lands, wonderful schools and good town
services.
Whether its South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, Yarmouthport or Bass River,
each area offers its own special charm. There are terrific restaurants,
excellent medical facilities, sea captains homes, herring runs, band
concerts, a seaside festival, 4 golf courses and 15 beaches. Home options range
from the modest to the superb.
Life here in Yarmouth is both gentle and active... and always interesting. Be

Yarmouth has two tales as to how it
got its name. One says the town was named after Great Yarmouth, a town on the
coast of England that was home to some of the Pilgrims. The other is that the
town is named after Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight on the south English coast at
the mouth of the river "Yar".
