Skydiving at the Cape Cod Airfield

Have you thought about your best options for seeing as much of Cape Cod as possible on your next vacation?

There are numerous ways to go about it, as you could take a cruise departing from one of the Cape’s ports, drive the Mid-Cape Highway in your vehicle, or take a tour visiting some of the region’s most popular sites.

Another option is doing some skydiving from the Cape Cod Airfield in Marstons Mills. A company called Skydive the Mills operates from this small airport located beside the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds Golf Course. It provides the unique opportunity to see most of the Cape at once.

Here’s a look at how this skydiving experience works and what you can expect when you arrive for your appointment.

An Overview of Skydive the Mills

Skydive the Mills is perhaps the most popular skydiving experience in all of Massachusetts. The drop zone offers views of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, and you can even see Boston’s skyline on a clear day.

All jumps begin from the Cape Cod Airfield, a small airport that has been in operation since 1929. The facility is one of the only airports in the entire country with grass runways, and its antique hangars and aircraft add to the atmosphere.

The plane you’ll depart in is a Cessna 182. This type of aircraft is the most commonly used for skydiving, and this particular airplane received a complete restoration in 2018, ensuring it’s in top-notch condition.

Once you’re up in the airplane, you’ll jump tandem with an experienced skydiving instructor, so there’s no need to worry about navigating your descent by yourself.

About the Experience

The adventure begins from the moment you arrive at the Cape Cod Airfield. You’ll start by meeting the staff and your instructor and filling out a waiver form. From there, you’ll go through a detailed training session that will keep you safe while in the air.

You’re then ready to get onto the aircraft, which will take you on a scenic ride over Cape Cod and reach a jumping altitude of 10,000 feet. Your instructor will then guide you through all the steps you’ll need to take before exiting the airplane and beginning your freefall.

After freefalling for a distance, the instructor will deploy the parachute, which is often the best part of the ride. You’ll slowly make your way back to Earth, floating toward the airport before landing in the grass. Your instructor will provide landing instructions before departure that you’ll follow as your experience comes to an end.

You can skydive at airports all over the country, but very few offer the same experience as Skydive the Mills because of the views you’ll have while in the air. If you’re at all interested in skydiving, give this experience in Marstons Mills a try during your Cape Cod vacation.

What it Costs

Naturally, you’ll want to know how much this experience costs before you book. It all depends on the experience you want and how many people are jumping.
