If you book a vacation rental in the Truro area, Ballston Beach is a must-visit because it’s perhaps the most scenic beach in all of Massachusetts.
Ballston Beach is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, so it sits directly on the Atlantic Ocean with clear views out to sea. However, it’s worth noting that the town of Truro operates the beach, so your National Seashore parking pass isn’t valid here.

The Location

Getting to Ballston Beach is easy, too, as it’s accessible via North Pamet Road and South Pamet Road, although the only parking lot is at the end of South Pamet. There’s an exit off Route 6 just before you reach downtown Truro that provides easy access to the beach.
When you approach the water, you’ll immediately be blown away by the rolling dunes that protect the seashore. You’ll feel like you’re in the Scottish Highlands for a moment until you reach the white sand waiting for you as you stroll to the water.
Ballston Beach is also only about two miles from the heart of Truro, so its amenities are available to you throughout your stay.
About the Beach
Before arrival, you should know that Ballston Beach is relatively rustic, as there aren’t any lifeguards on duty, and it doesn’t have much in the way of activities. There aren’t any concessions or changerooms, although portable toilets are available during the busy season.
Beach fires are allowed at Ballston Beach with a permit. You can purchase a license online between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM on the day you wish to have your fire through the Truro Recreation & Beach Department. Each fire costs $10, and the beach is limited to six fire spaces per night.
Parking at Ballston Beach is a bit of a challenge because there are only 65 spots available. You’ll also need a Truro Beach Parking Sticker between the third Saturday of June and Labor Day if you’re bringing a car to the beach.
Getting your parking pass is a process because you’ll have to prove you’re staying at a vacation rental in Truro. The beach sticker will cost $75 for a one-week stay, but it’s likely worth the cost because it provides unlimited access to all of Truro’s public beaches.
Oceanside Activities
When visiting Ballston Beach, you’ll immediately notice that it’s relatively uncrowded despite the beach’s large size. Parking and the availability of beach stickers are the main reasons, but it’s good news for those with a nearby vacation rental.
It will also become apparent that sunbathing is the main activity here, as the majority of visitors will be lying on beach towels and enjoying the rays.
However, Ballston Beach is also a popular spot for surfers and bodyboarders because of its relatively calm waves. While large compared to locations on Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay, these waves are smaller than most beaches on the Atlantic side, making them more manageable for less experienced surfers.
Fishing is another popular pastime at Ballston Beach, as you can wander into the ocean and cast near the shore. Stripers and bluefish are the most common species in this area, but you’ll need to be careful fishing when the surf is high because it’s possible to get pulled into the water.
Visiting Truro
Booking a vacation rental near Ballston Beach also puts you close to downtown Truro, one of Cape Cod’s quieter villages.
The community doesn’t have much of a downtown area. Still, Blackfish restaurant offers some of the Cape’s best seafood, and Avenue D Wine Bar has a great selection of whites, reds, and roses from around the globe and beer from Massachusetts-based breweries. These venues are both minutes from Ballston Beach.
Further dining is available in North Truro, a 15-minute drive from the beach, and Wellfleet and Provincetown are also in the area.
