There might be some disappointment when your kids discover you’ll be vacationing on Cape Cod in late October. After all, this is Halloween, and they’re probably looking forward to spending the evening trick-or-treating with their friends.
Fortunately, there are plenty of solutions on the Cape. Finding safe spots to trick-or-treat when you don’t know a community very well can be challenging, but Cape Cod has options.
These trick-or-treat events give your children the opportunity to dress up and collect some candy without wandering potentially busy streets. Here’s a look at some safe Halloween activities for your kids on Cape Cod in 2023.
Hyannis Main Street
One of the most highly-anticipated Cape Cod Halloween events is Halloween Safe Trick-or-Treat in Hyannis. Main Street will be closed to traffic between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. on October 31, allowing kids of all ages to wander without worrying about cars.
Businesses along Main Street will be handing out treats throughout the evening, ensuring all the candy is safe for your kids, as well. Hyannis Main Street is the place to be on Halloween, so make sure you’re down there a bit before 4:00 to get in on the action.
Yarmouth Port Green
Another option for a safe evening on the Cape is Yarmouth Port’s Halloween Trick-or-Treat event. This free celebration runs from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. at Yarmouth Port Common, home to spooky locations like Edward Gorey House, Winslow-Crocker House, the Chapter House, and Captain Bangs Hallet House.
You can visit all of these historic buildings during this family-friendly event, and your kids can collect treats along the way. There’s also a Halloween storytime at the Yarmouth Port Library at 5:30 p.m. If your vacation rental is in the Yarmouth Port area, a historic Halloween experience could be the perfect way to spend your evening.
Cape Cod Church
For a full night of fun, check out Cape Cod Church in East Falmouth. This venue runs its annual Trunk-or-Treat event from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. on Halloween night, featuring food trucks, carnival games, face painting, and inflatables.
Of course, the main attraction is the trick or treating, and the event has you covered. Instead of going door to door, volunteers will hand candy out in the parking lot from their vehicles. Your kids will be safe, off the streets, and in a fun and inclusive environment, ensuring you can make your Cape Cod Halloween the best one ever.
Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich
The Sandwich Police Department also hosts a Trunk-or-Treat event in the Heritage Museums and Gardens parking lot. This event is a bit of a Halloween bonus because it takes place on Sunday, October 29, between 10:00 a.m. and noon.
So, if your kids are a bit disappointed about missing out on Halloween back home, this event allows them to collect some treats before the big day arrives. Make sure you bring their costumes, even if you’ll be leaving the Cape before Halloween, because you can still participate.
Osterville Village
Another early Halloween event worth considering is the Halloween Parade in Osterville Village. This event starts at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the Village Flagpole. Your kids can dress up and participate as the parade meanders through the village before ending at the Osterville Village Library.
Once at the library, your children can hang out in their costumes and make new friends. They’ll also collect some candy, providing yet another way to make the most of your Halloween weekend.
Near Your Vacation Rental
Of course, one of the best things about booking a vacation rental is that you’ll spend your time in a residential neighborhood. If the community seems quiet and other kids are treat-or-treating, it’s probably safe to venture out with your children.
Spending Halloween on the Cape gives you a unique chance to trick-or-treat in a different part of the country. It will be an evening your kids will remember for a long time, so don’t hesitate to book a vacation rental during this magical time of year.
