Cape Cod is full of beautiful villages that make excellent vacation destinations. You’re never far from a world-class beach, delicious cuisine, or historical sites, no matter where you stay.
Wianno is a small village just outside of downtown Osterville that provides a quiet place to spend your time. The community overlooks the scenic Nantucket Sound and includes plenty of spots where you can enjoy the water.
You’ll also have access to all of Osterville’s amenities when staying near Wianno, and Craigville, Hyannis, Mashpee, and Barnstable Village are minutes away, as well.
Here’s a look at what it’s like to vacation in the Cape’s Wianno area.
Plenty of Beaches
Wianno has access to both West Bay and Nantucket Sound, so there are plenty of oceanfront areas in the community. However, it’s worth noting that many of the beaches are private, as there’s no way to access them without cutting through someone’s property.
One exception is Town Way to Water, a small waterfront area at the end of Sea View Avenue. Here, you can access the channel connecting West Bay with Nantucket Sound, and there’s sometimes a tiny beach, depending on the water levels.
You might see some locals fishing at Town Way to Water from time to time, and there is a small parking lot with room for about four cars. A Barnstable beach sticker is required to park there.
The main beach in Wianno is Dowse’s Beach, which sits at the east end of the community. This venue borders East Bay and Nantucket Sound and offers white sand, a fishing pier, and a rock jetty. If you’re lucky, you might even see some nesting piping plover while you’re there.
One thing to keep in mind is that Dowse’s Beach doesn’t have washrooms or change rooms, making it less convenient for families. The beach also doesn’t allow non-resident parking, even with a beach sticker, so it’s only accessible if your vacation rental is within walking distance.
Dining in Osterville
Although Wianno feels secluded, it’s very close to Osterville, and you’ll never find yourself far from the community’s dining options.
Main Street in Osterville is home to popular spots like Wimpy’s Seafood Cafe, Five Bays Bistro, and Crisp Flatbread. If you’re looking for a bite and a drink or two, The Fox Hole is your best bet, while The Salty Cow and Gone Chocolate have ice cream and other desserts.
Away from Main Street, the Chart Room at Crosby’s offers outstanding seafood dishes, a full bar, and a nautical theme that’s sure to put you in the spirit.
While restaurants might not be abundant in this area, there’s enough variety to satisfy you throughout your Cape Cod vacation.
Marinas and Cruises
As you might expect when staying so close to the ocean and a harbor, multiple marinas make their home on the north end of West Bay and within walking distance of most of Wianno.
Crosby Yacht Yard is the main marina in the area, featuring seasonal and transient slips and moorings. You’ll want to complete your reservation request before your arrival on the Cape to ensure there’s room for your boat throughout your stay. There’s also a boat launch, fuel dock, and maintenance facilities at Crosby Yacht Yard.
It’s also possible to book slips next door at Nauticus Marina. However, this marina is far smaller, as they only have 17 spaces, so you’ll want to reserve yours well in advance if you’re set on this location.
You can take a tour from Wianno, too, through Osterville-Edgartown Harbor Cruise. This small business allows you to book a private cruise into all five bays in the Osterville-Cotuit area, or you can take a longer trek to Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard.
The company does custom cruises and sunset cocktail trips, as well, giving you all kinds of options when getting out on the water.
Enjoying the Area
Wianno is a luxurious community featuring some of the most impressive houses on the entire Cape. Wandering the village allows you to experience the architecture and history that make Cape Cod special.
You can head up to the Osterville Historical Museum, a two-acre campus with a dozen historic boats, decorative arts, and period furniture, or simply walk down Main Street and check out the old buildings that line downtown Osterville.
One thing for sure is that even if you run out of things to do in Wianno because you’re never far from larger Cape Cod communities. As a result, Wianno is one of the Cape’s most convenient places to stay during your vacation.
